Do you have problems understanding how to use color effectively? This eight-week class will provide a chance to learn color theory and how it applies to your art work. The class begins with an introduction to the color wheel. We will discuss color and its relation to value, hue, intensity and temperature. We will go over the effects of simultaneous contrast, how color effects emotion, how color relates to atmospheric perspective, color harmony and its relation to analogous colors and complementary colors. We will learn about different color schemes, such as split complementary, triadic, and tetradic.
Each week will begin with a lesson on one aspect of color and will follow with independent work based on the lesson and supporting the theme of the day. Individual direction will be offered as positive and constructive critique during class time. Several still life’s will be available, or you can work from photos. At the end of class, we will all participate in a group critique to further support us on our journey to using color effectively. Please come with a color wheel which is available at any art supply store. Also bring your paints (oils, acrylics, or watercolors) and some extra inexpensive supports to do color exercises on.
