Yes, it’s Farmers Market season again! Well – maybe not this week. But when the fair weather returns, Farmers Markets all over the state are up and running. Case in point: the Riverwalk Farmers Market in Milford’s historic downtown district. Every Saturday, 9:00am-1:00pm, from May through October, the Milford Riverwalk is awash with color and buzzing with activity.
Back for its 20th season, the Riverwalk Farmers Market is much more than a place to get the freshest produce. Farmers markets help to support farm families and also artisans: bakers and soap makers, jam and jelly makers, purveyors of the finest cheeses and herbs, painters, dancers and musicians, knitters and jewelry makers and more. In these socially conscious times, the farmers’ market helps raise awareness on issues of agriculture, health and the environment. You can’t help but sense the warmth of small town life and revel in the comfort of community. Whether you’re a visitor passing through, uplifted by a friendly smile, or two old friends catching up on the week’s events, the market is a communal event.
Advantage Milford: also sharing the Riverwalk is the Mispillion Art League (named for the river it overlooks). For 12 years now, this colorful centerpiece has served the area in much the same way as the Farmers Market by providing a colorful venue for artists; a center for presenting programs on art, health and culture; a place to commune; and a classroom to learn how to express your creative side.
So it makes sense to merge the best of what the Milford Farmers Market and the Mispillion Art League have to offer into the Farmers Market Studio. You might say it happened organically as they share the Riverwalk location and the pageantry of the market is ideal for artistic expression! For the third season in a row, Mispillion Art League will offer the Farmers Market Studio at the gallery, one Saturday every month from 10:00am-1:00pm during the luscious market season.
Rosemary Connelly and Cathy Walls will take turns curating this series. These sessions are relaxed workshops of instruction in watercolor and sometimes even pastels if that’s what you like (all art materials supplied). Designed for beginners, even those with some experience will have fun capturing their morning purchases on paper. Arrive early and stroll the Milford Farmers Market, do some shopping and bring your purchases to the gallery by 10:00am. There you will get instruction on how to arrange, sketch and paint a still life composition using your veggies. After a great day at the market, you’ll take home your very own work of art with your dinner ingredients. In other words: Buy it, paint it, eat it!
Rosemary Connelly will lead the August 13 session, and Cathy Walls will guide you on June 11 July 9 and September 24. Pre-registration is required, each three hour session is only $35 Members and $45 Non-members. Register online, call (302)430-7647, or drop in the gallery at 5 N. Walnut St. in Milford.
